Finding Joy in the Wild Places of Maine

By Moose Gurl (aka Amber Lee)

There’s a kind of joy you can’t buy, bottle, or binge-watch.
It lives in the hush between wind gusts.
In the ripple of water where a moose just exhaled.
In the moment you realize you’re not alone—and never really were.

Out here in the wild places, joy doesn’t shout. It whispers.

It bubbles up in the quiet, when the only soundtrack is nature’s own:

  • The soft plop of moose breath blowing bubbles in the shallows
  • The delicate drip drip drip of water sliding off fur
  • The distant crunch of something moving through the trees—slow, deliberate, ancient

And then, something shifts.
You learn to listen differently.
To notice the little things.
Like the way a moose’s ears stand straight up, swiveling like radar dishes.
Or how they pause, turn, and look—not at you, but toward something else.
A signal.
Something’s coming.

And in that moment, you’re not just watching wildlife.
You’re part of it.

The Gift of Stillness

There’s peace in knowing you don’t have to fill the silence.
No small talk. No notifications.
Just you, the moose, and the mystery of what might arrive next.

Sometimes it’s another moose.
Sometimes it’s a fox, a bear, or a loon calling from the lake.
And sometimes it’s just the wind, carrying stories you’ll never fully understand—but you feel them anyway.

And for a brief moment…
all is right with this baffling world.
The noise fades.
The worries pause.
And you remember what it feels like to simply be.

The Scent of Serenity

But it’s not just what you hear—it’s what you smell.
The woods after a gentle rain carry a scent that’s earthy and clean, like the forest just took a deep breath.
The breeze brings hints of blooming wildflowers—sweet, subtle, and fleeting.
It’s nature’s own perfume, and it lingers just long enough to make you smile.

Reflections from the Trail

This week, I’ve had a few quiet moments to reflect.
And I realized just how much I’ve missed guiding tours this year as I have had to take some needed time for recovery from a knee replacement. Everything I miss is……….
Not just for the peace and beauty we’ve talked about above—but the people.
The stories I hear every day from my guests.
The laughter, the tears, the shared awe when a moose steps out of the mist.

And when they leave, they’re not the only ones leaving with something.
I am so much richer for the moments they’ve allowed me to be part of.
For the memories they’ve made in front of me.
For the things they’ve shared with me—sometimes deeply personal, sometimes delightfully silly, always meaningful.

It’s a gift.
And I never take it for granted.

Why It Matters

In a world that moves fast and talks loud, these moments are medicine.
They remind us to slow down.
To breathe.
To pay attention.

Because joy isn’t always fireworks.
Sometimes it’s a moose blowing bubbles.
Sometimes it’s the scent of pine and petals.
And sometimes it’s the quiet honor of being invited into someone’s story.

If you’re longing for a little wild joy of your own, We would love to share it with you.
